US Women on top of the World

Redemption. Glory. Pride.

These are just three of the words that can be used to describe the US Women’s victory in the Gold Medal game against Japan earlier today. Not long ago I wrote an article about complaints being filed about the women having scripted celebrations. There has also been a lot of chatter about the women’s team using illegal tactics in the 18 yard box on free and corner kicks.

Well today all the complaints are about as useful as a dirty diaper because the women redeemed last summer’s World Cup defeat to the Japanese in a 2-1 victory Thursday afternoon. Carli Lloyd was the key on offense scoring both goals for the Americans with the first coming on a crafty cross from forward Alex Morgan to take a 1-0 lead.

Lloyd also scored on a strike around the 18 yard box to put the Americans up 2-0. Japan closed the gap in the 74th minute but with some hard-nosed defense and beautiful goal keeping by Hope Solo the Americans pulled off the victory giving them gold in three straight Olympics. Congrats ladies, you deserve this and are an absolute joy to watch!
